Our Trip to the Northwest Territories

We had driven up to Dawson City, Yukon a few years ago, so we thought we'd drive up to Yellowknife, NWT this summer.  What a majorly L-O-N-G drive!  When we went to Calgary last summer, I met a woman from High Level, AB (two hours south of the NWT border) and she said they had to drive south for hours to go to Peace River to shop (at WalMart and other stores they don't have).  So we were surprised to see that they have Fields, Bargain Shop and a new Boston Pizza and Canadian Tire.  That was the end of civilization until many hours later, when we drove into Hay River, NWT, on the south end of the Great Slave Lake.  The railroad tracks end there, and you'd think they'd have a ferry or barge to ship people and stuff up to Yellowknife, but no, there's only that remote, rough and long road!  We didn't see any moose or deer but there was a bear near our campground, and there are a lot of beautiful buffalo roaming free along the highway.  Deb :)
